Does weather impact broadband speeds?

By December 26, 2014 General

Kind of.

On December 24 there were high wind warnings. Our Network Operations Centre sent out an internal advisory alert.

Although small amounts of rain, wind, or snow shouldn’t impact the speed of any Internet connection. Large storms, can be cause for concern. High winds can knock out power lines, while extreme cold can cause ground heaves, which may break or tear existing copper lines.

Our biggest problem is wind or ice. While wind can push over hydro poles, often the price_wiresoblem can be due to nearby trees. Every year, there are a significant number of outages due to trees coming into contact with communication cables (both fibre and copper).

Good news. There were no actual outages. But we are still only in December!
